Know  Andrott

Androth is the nearest island to the mainland and has an east-west orientation unlike other islands lying in the north-south direction. It is the Largest Island in the Lakshadweep. Thick vegetation mainly coconut groves, add to the beauty of the island. It was the first island to embrace Islam. The Saint Hasrath Ubaidullah (R),who is belived to have converted the people of islands to Islam, died here and his tomb still remains in the Juma at Mosque. Religious preachers from here are held in high esteem. Fishing industry is well developed, next only to Minicoy and Agatti.Coir and Copra are the major products of the island.

The beautiful Androth Island reflects the rich historical past and  religious  legacy  of  the bygone golden era. Blessed with an unparalleled natural and scenic beauty, the Androth island boasts to be the biggest island of Lakshadweep. Reflecting the rich ancestry of Lakshadweep, the beautiful island of Androth has been the cradle of many civilizations of the ancient times. Originally the religious seat of Saint Ubaidullah, the indigenous people of the Androth island were so influenced with his preachings that they adopted Islam as the state religion of the region.

The splendid architectural monuments of the Androth island bears testimony to the rich engineering skills and creative imaginations of the ancient times. The exquisite designs of the famous Jumaat Mosque of the island that houses the tomb of the divine Saint Ubaidullah portrays the artistic flare of the local people of bygone era.

          The Androth island has also been a centre of attraction during the british period who had built a huge tower with search lights to enable the ships of the region to locate the island. Amidst the picturesque landscape of the Androth island, the giant lighthouse stands tall with ita over imposing architectural structure. The traditional industry of fishing forms the backbone of the economy of the Androth island.

Sport in Andrott.

Sports popular in Andrott  include volleyball, Football, cricket, Basketball and badminton . Volleyball is the unofficial national sport in Andrott, and the Island has so many medals in Volleyball, though Football is the most popular sport. A wide variety of sports was played throughout the Island. These include, Uppu,Hand Wrestling, forambidal, Gusthi etc.

       Andrott has hosted several State level sporting events, such

Island Volley ball Championship And Inter Island Football Championship.

Volleyball is a sport played all over Andrott,  It is a popular recreation sport. Andrott is ranked 1^st  in the Lakshadweep. Doing doing well in the youth and junior levels, Andrott came as champions 14 times out of 21 in the state level SGFI selection meet conducted in various Islands organized by Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs.

Hon'ble Administrator Sri. Amar Nath IAS inaugurated the 3rd UT Level Sports Festival at Androth on 15.01.2012 at 4 pm. The opening ceremony was in a befitting manner and the Bharathiyam  display of  students were appreciated by the Administrator. The Administrator declared that the prize  will be doubled this year.
